Using scrappy supplies....

for non-scrappy projects.

Although I'm not a huge fan of altered items, it brings me joy to be able to use up some of my scrappy supplies for a non-scrappy purpose. And, I had the opportunity to do this recently for my daughter's fifth birthday party.

First of all, I made cupcake toppers using cardstock, patterned paper, toothpicks, my 2" scalloped circle punch, and my 1 3/4" circle punch.

In Word, using text boxes and shapes, I made circles with different colours and filled them with a saying or a picture I found online. I printed them out and punched them with my 1 3/4" punch. I glued them to a scalloped circle, with a toothpick sandwiched in between.

For the treat bags, I used regular freezer bags (the ones you tie with a twist tie) and followed the same idea, but printed the children's names in the circles and then punched a hole above their names and tied a ribbon to close the bags (I also used a twist tie and covered it with the ribbon, to make sure they'd stay shut.)

And for the craft, we made princesses out of toilet paper rolls.

We covered the toilet paper rolls with patterned paper and cardstock, drew faces and added paper frills, some bling and some ribbon. We made capes out of felt and topped them all off with glittered cardstock crowns.

All in all, an inexpensive and creative party. I think my favourite part was when the girls asked if they could keep the cupcake toppers and take them home. One of them asked me, with wonder in her voice, how I cut them out-- did I have fancy scissors? Sage jumped up from the table and ran to grab her 1.5" scalloped punch, found a scrap of paper and gave them a demonstration of how it worked! So fun!

Layering

I think if I had a theme for my September kit layouts, it would be layering!

Layering is so fun to do, especially with rub-ons, shapes cut out of patterned paper and pretty brads.

Here's what I did. I cut out the rub-on shape I wanted to use and placed it on my layout with the backing still on. Then with my craft knife (& sometimes with a circle punch) I cut out the flowers from the Bo Bunny patterned paper and placed those on my layout, without adhesive. Then I moved things around until I was happy with the result. I rubbed on my rub-ons, adhered my patterned paper in place and added a pretty brad (or two, or three...)

Here are some examples:

(With this layout, I also added some AC felt flowers (also from the kit) & a scalloped punch to the layering goodness.)

(On this layout, I printed out my journaling in a circle in Word and printed it onto the My Mind's Eye pp that came in the kit, to add to the layers.)

butting in......

so with all the excitement of the september kit,
which is an awesome kit i might add,
i failed to post a monday challenge...

so i am hi-jacking weds. from Marcy and posting
the BOM challenge tonight..

last friday i took my girls for their first plane
ride over the city..fun stuff right? well it was
up until the last 5 minutes when i started to
feel sick...when we finally landed i made a mental
note, or a "note to self", thati was always gonna
be queasy on airplanes...

so that brings me to this weeks challenge,
i want you to document a "note to self". it doesn't
matter what its about..as long as its about you...

i used the sep. kit for this layout...

and FYI? when i showed my hubby the photos from our adventure,
this photo made me feel queasy when i flipped to it...sheesh...

oh!!! and good luck to all that are entering the DT call contest!!!
i can't wait to see what you guys submit!!!
bring it on!!!

later,
Jen
